Matt Meets Gordon: Episode Three

Posted by Matt '13 on Monday, October 26, 2009
Hello readers! I would like to use this entry to indulge the English Major in me and to tell all of you about a wonderful experience that I had about a week ago. This experience involved the wonderful beauty of Gordon’s campus. I had this experience in the comfort of my dorm room early in the morning as I awoke before class. As I opened the blinds, a flash of red light poured into my room that temporarily blinded me. When my eyes had adjusted to the light, a beautiful sight emerged right before my eyes. I saw the tree before my window glowing in the full radiance of a New England autumn. In that moment, the absolute and stunning beauty of God’s creation overcame me. Seeing that sight at the beginning of my day put me in a good mood until I fell asleep. From then on, each morning the same beautiful sight has awakened me. Ever since I was given my new natural alarm clock, I have found myself repeatedly struck by the beauty of God’s creation. Walking around this exquisite campus, I have been constantly seeing God in his creation, and as a result, he has rarely been far from my mind in the past few weeks. I can only hope that this beauty persists through the winter. I would love to tell you more about this experience, but since I am out of space and a picture can tell a thousand words, here is a picture of the tree that so inspired me. As usual, if you have any questions, feel free to email me at Matthew.Clemmer@gordon.edu. Thanks for reading and God bless!

Matt Meets Gordon: Episode Two

Hello Readers! I hope that you all are enjoying (or tolerating) the beginning of a new school year. I would like to use this entry to talk to you about a key part of the freshman experience, Gordon’s Outdoor education program. As you may have already heard, every Gordon student is required to take one of two outdoor education classes while they are at Gordon. There are two ways to fulfill this requirement, either going on a La Vida trip or taking the Discovery class. For more information about the outdoor education program, go to http://www.gordon.edu/lavida. Anyways, I chose to take Discovery during my first quad at Gordon. I went into the class not very excited about the idea and treating it just as something that I had to do. However, now that I am done with Discovery, I would choose to do it again in a heartbeat. Not only have I had all kinds of fun with my group on the high and low ropes courses, but I have learned a lot about myself and Discovery has given me lots of opportunities to work on parts of my life where I need to improve in a safe and loving environment. Even though I have loved every aspect of the Discovery experience, my favorite part was the group camping trip that I went on a few weekends ago. While this trip was not nearly as intense as La Vida, it gave me an opportunity to spend time in God’s magnificent creation and a chance to step back and honestly reflect on my transition to college thus far. For me, the weekend camping trip was a miniature version of my Discovery experience, challenging me physically, in my faith and in my relationships with others. In conclusion, even though I was not very excited at the outset, I am so thankful for my experience in Gordon’s wonderful outdoor education program. Here are some pictures from the weekend.

Matt Meets Gordon: Episode 1

Hello readers! As I have told you in the About Me section, my name is Matt Clemmer and I am a Freshman English and Philosophy Major at Gordon College. What you are currently reading is my blog, which I have titled Matt Meets Gordon (MMG) in homage a TV show I have never seen, Boy Meets World. In this first entry, I would like to introduce you to MMG and tell you what I hope to accomplish with this blog. MMG will be my best attempt to provide prospective students with an idea of what the Freshman Experience is like at Gordon. Looking back on my college search, I really wish that something like what I hope MMG will become had been available to me as I was trying to decide where to go to college. In this blog, I will try to cover as many different aspects of being a freshman at Gordon as I possibly can. This will include my thoughts on roommates, Residence Life, Campus Life, Chapel, Athletic Events, REC IM, Academics, adventures in Boston and many other subjects. By truthfully and completely recording my experiences as a freshman and making them available to you, I hope that God can use this blog to provide you with a valuable tool for use in your college decision process. Also, if you have any questions for me or anything you want me to write about, feel free to send me an email at Matthew.Clemmer@gordon.edu. Thanks for reading and God bless.
